Cochlear Implants
Restoring hearing- and connections - with cochlear implants
If you have severe hearing loss, a hearing aid may not be enough to help you connect with your loved ones and the world around you. At West Jefferson Medical Center, we offer cutting-edge solutions, like cochlear implants, designed to transform the way you experience sound.
What are cochlear implants?
Cochlear implants are sophisticated, electronic devices. Unlike hearing aids, which amplify sounds, cochlear implants bypass damaged parts of the inner ear (cochlea) and directly stimulate the auditory nerve. This direct stimulation allows someone with hearing loss to perceive sound, making it an effective solution for those who receive limited or no benefit from hearing aids.
How do cochlear implants work?
Cochlear implants consist of two main components: an internal implant and an external processor.
- The external processor is worn on or behind your ear. It captures sounds from the environment, processes them into digital signals, and transmits these signals to the internal implant.
- The internal implant, which is surgically placed under the skin behind your ear, then stimulates the auditory nerve, sending signals to the brain, where they are perceived as sound. This process enables individuals to hear speech, environmental sounds, and enjoy a richer, more immersive auditory experience.
Who is a candidate for a cochlear implant?
Cochlear implants are suitable for people who:
- Have severe to profound hearing loss — Candidates typically get limited benefit from hearing aids due to the severity of their hearing loss.
- Receive limited speech understanding — People who struggle to understand speech, even with powerful hearing aids, may benefit from cochlear implants.
- Show candidacy through evaluation: A comprehensive assessment by our team of experts helps determine if cochlear implants are the right solution for you.
