20 healthy resolutions for 2020 that aren’t about losing weight

The New Year is a perfect time to strive for improvement, goal-setting, and embracing the new chapter with an open heart and arms. Despite having the right intentions for the new year, all too often we make the mistake of focusing on the wrong resolutions for the year.

Many of us will make the resolution to lose weight, but solely focusing on a number on a scale is not necessarily beneficial or a good indicator of our health. Concentrating on body image fears like pant size makes us ignore other aspects of a healthy lifestyle.

Of course, if losing weight is important to your physical health as explained by a doctor, then a plan for healthy weight loss should be outlined by a doctor or registered dietitian and followed. But if you are searching for a way to prioritize your health, opt to forego the typical I-want-to-lose-20-pounds goal and make these resolutions instead:

  1. Get more sleep
  2. Complain less
  3. Start meditating
  4. Drink more water
  5. Practice gratitude
  6. Volunteer on a regular basis
  7. Read one book a month
  8. Learn something new each day
  9. Go for walks
  10. Be kinder to others
  11. Try new activities outside your comfort zone
  12. Cut back on social media time
  13. Let go of things out of your control
  14. Discuss your feelings
  15. Cook more meals at home
  16. Eat more fruits and vegetables
  17. Live more in the moment
  18. Don't make any assumptions
  19. Learn a new skill or hobby
  20. Be kinder to yourself
