West Jefferson Medical Center (WJMC), beginning July 10, 2013, will provide a weekly‐accessible nurse practitioner to the Grand Isle community at its new West Jefferson Primary Care Clinic. The nurse practitioner will see patients in the clinic on the 2nd floor of the Grand Isle Multiplex at 3101 Louisiana Highway 1. The hours will be Wednesdays 9:00am to 4:30pm by appointment and/or walk‐in service. For appointments, call 855-869‐1582 toll‐free.

Grand Isle Mayor David Carmadelle invites the townspeople to a ribbon cutting and reception on Monday, July 8, 2013 from 11:00am to 2:00pm in order to meet Nurse Practitioner Jeffrey McMahon (currently located at the West Jefferson Continuity Care Center at the Lapalco Physicians Center in Harvey) and the rest of the staff, who will serve in the new clinic. Blood pressure screenings will also be available.

The services of the West Jefferson Primary Care Clinic will include care for common family illnesses and minor injuries in addition to preventative and wellness care. The Family Nurse Practitioner will provide referrals, immunizations, primary care, sports/work physicals and care of minor cuts and trauma.

“We are excited to provide services to the community of Grand Isle,” said Nancy R. Cassagne, WJMC CEO. “This will provide convenience, access and continuity to people on the island. Parish officials amended local ordinances to include Grand Isle in the Hospital’s Service District making it possible for West Jefferson to open and operate this new weekly clinic in Grand Isle.”

The Town of Grand Isle is located 100 land miles by car from West Jefferson Medical Center. Part of Jefferson Parish, Grand Isle is somewhat isolated, not being connected geographically to the Parish by land.   It is also 95 miles away from the seat of Jefferson Parish Government.  By boat, Grand Isle is about 50 miles from the Town of Jean Lafitte, also situated in the parish of Jefferson.

A barrier island, this remote and beloved oasis is known for its world‐class fishing and birding habitat. As of the 2010 census, the town resident population was 1,296 people. During summers, tourists and seasonal residents can increase this number to several thousand.

The island is currently served by the Grand Isle Fire Department for EMS. Emergency transportation services will continue to be provided by the Grand Isle Fire Department.

The Family Doctor weekly walk‐in clinic will add another important component of care the Island deserves. “We believe our new clinic will be an asset to Grand Isle,” said Joseph Imseis, M.D., of the Family Doctors at West Jefferson.
