Surgical Weight Loss Options

Weight loss options

If you’ve tried various weight loss methods and found it difficult to keep the weight off, you’re not alone. Many people share the frustration of battling the scale, searching for a safe and lasting solution to achieve meaningful weight loss.

In fact, over 120 million Americans—almost 65% of the population—are dealing with the physical and emotional toll of obesity. They, too, have gone through countless diets and medications, only to find themselves back where they started, or worse, with even more weight to lose.

But there is hope. Thanks to advancements in medical technology, there are now effective surgical solutions that can help you finally take control of your weight and your health. While many procedures can help you lose weight, some come with higher risks than others.

At the LCMC Health Center for Bariatric Surgery, we provide a range of surgical options tailored to your specific needs, including Sleeve Gastrectomy, Gastric Bypass, and LapBand revisions. Our team is here to help you find the best path forward for lasting success.

Vertical sleeve gastrectomy
The Sleeve Gastrectomy is now the most commonly performed weight-loss operation in the United States. It has outstanding results and fewer complications than any other surgical procedure. The operation is performed using the laparoscopic technique, requiring several small incisions, from 1/4 inch to an inch in length. Patients stay in the hospital over night, and the vast majority go home on the day following surgery. Weight loss is rapid and steady, often reaching your target weight within 8 to 12 months.
Gastric Bypass
Laparoscopic Gastric Bypass (LGB) surgery makes the stomach smaller and allows food to bypass part of the small intestine. It is the longest-practiced and best-researched weight loss surgery, and is the gold-standard procedure for bariatric surgery. The stomach is made smaller by creating a pouch at the top of the stomach. The smaller stomach is then connected directly to the middle portion of the small intestine, bypassing the rest of the stomach and the upper portion of the small intestine, thus reducing the amount of calories the body can absorb. Patients having gastric bypass usually go home the first day after surgery and resume normal activity within 2-3 weeks, the same as those undergoing a Laparoscopic Vertical Sleeve Gastrectomy.
LAP-BAND Revision

For many patients, the Laparoscopic Adjustable Gastric Band (LAGB) was an effective, minimally-invasive tool for assisting in weight loss, and it was the most popular bariatric procedure in the first decade of the 2000’s. However, long-term research has found that the majority of patient who underwent LAGB had significant weight regain and, in some cases, complications such as band slippage, port infection, abdominal pain, intestinal obstruction, and hernias. Many patients throughout the world have since undergone surgical removal of their band, often with conversion to aVertical Sleeve Gastrectomy or Gastric Bypass to continue pursuing weight loss.

Band removal and/or conversion can be done laparoscopically and safely by the experienced surgeons at the LCMC Health Center for Bariatric surgery. We offer impressive patient satisfaction and safety ratings and are accredited by the American Society of Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery as well as a certified Bariatric Center of Excellence® by the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services.
