Peritoneal surface malignancies

Peritoneal surface malignancy care

The peritoneal surface malignancy team at University Medical Center treats cancer of the abdominal lining (or peritoneum). These cancers have either spread from an initial organ in the abdomen such as the colon, rectum, appendix, stomach, or ovaries, or can be the primary site of origin, such as in mesothelioma. These diseases can be complex, especially if they are a result of spread of the primary cancer to the abdominal lining, and are best managed by an expert multidisciplinary team that can tailor treatment to each individual patient. Options for treatment include surgery consisting of cytoreduction (removing the visible tumors) with or without HIPEC (chemotherapy delivered directly to the abdominal cavity) and chemotherapy.
