It’s summertime and the sun’s out in full force. This is the time of year that we find ourselves cooling down at the pool or the beach to catch a breeze. Everyone knows the detrimental effects of ultraviolet or UV exposure from the sun on our skin. This is why it’s so important to apply UV-A and UV-B sunblock. But you can’t forget about another important organ that you use every day: your eyes!
Life-long exposure to UV light is related to eye conditions like cataracts or pterygium development.
Here are a few reminders and tips to help protect your eyes from the sun’s harsh UV rays.
- Everyone should take precautions - babies, kids, adults
- UV exposure is dangerous all year round. It’s important to follow these tips even in the fall and winter.
- Wear UV-blocking sunglasses when outside, even if you’re outside for a few seconds.
- A hat can add protection
- Don’t be fooled by a cloudy or gloomy day: the sun’s rays can get through clouds so wear your UV-blocking sunglasses
- The higher in altitude, the greater the UV exposure
- Water, snow, and sand reflect UV light which increases exposure so stay protected
- Never look at the sun: the back of your eye can be permanently damaged, which can lead to vision loss
You may have damage to your eyes due to UV exposure if you are experiencing these symptoms:
- Pain or redness in the eyes
- Tears
- Blurry vision
- Swelling
- Light sensitivity
- Twitching of the eyelids
- Gritty sensation in the eyes
- Temporary loss of vision
- Seeing halos
If you are experiencing any of these symptoms, please schedule an appointment with our Optical Center by calling 504-702-EYES (3937) today.
