New Burn & Trauma Center fills need in New Orleans

With its opening, University Medical Center now features the only Level 1 Burn/ Trauma Center between Houston, Texas, and Tampa Bay, Florida. State Fire Marshal H. "Butch," Browning said the new center will "save people’s lives, including firefighters.”

Dr. Jeffrey Carter, medical director for the burn center explained how vital it is to have a local burn center for the community. “If you delay care for about two hours, which is the average transport time, your mortality can go up dramatically, somewhere in the order of 20 percent. A 1-in-5 chance of dying because it took you longer to get there is not really acceptable, particularly when you have the rich medical community you do in New Orleans.”
