Dr. Peter DeBlieux Named First Chief Experience Officer (CXO) at University Medical Center

New role to address the human experience of care, elevate family- and patient-centered care, restore joy to the practice of medicine

University Medical Center New Orleans has appointed Peter DeBlieux, MD, to serve as the hospital’s first Chief Experience Officer (CXO). DeBlieux previously served as University Medical Center’s Chief Medical Officer. The change in leadership went into effect on July 9, 2018.

The CXO is a prominent position in many health systems, including facilities like the Cleveland Clinic. In his new role, DeBlieux will lead a team that addresses the human experience of care and integrates a quadruple aim into University Medical Center’s culture by elevating patient- and family-centered care, and restoring joy to the practice of medicine.
Bill Masterton, University Medical Center’s President, and CEO said the new position will help advance the medical center’s mission of providing the highest level of care to the community.

DeBlieux has a long history of positively impacting patient care and supporting physicians and employees who drive University Medical Center’s dual mission: 1) to provide exceptional, patient-centric care and 2) to establish a world-class academic experience to train the next generation of healthcare professionals.

An Emergency Medicine physician, Dr. DeBlieux served as University Medical Center’s Chief Medical Officer for three years and previously served as the hospital’s Associate Medical Director and Director of Patient Safety and Quality. He is a Clinical Professor of Medicine at LSU Health New Orleans and a Clinical Professor of Surgery at Tulane University. In 2005, he cared for patients, visitors, and employees throughout Hurricane Katrina at Charity Hospital and led LSU Health Sciences Center’s Emergency Medical Services in the period of recovery thereafter. In 2017, he was named the recipient of the New Orleans Legends Award based on his community service and leadership.

In addition to his responsibilities at University Medical Center, DeBlieux is also the medical liaison for the NFL Visiting Team, Medical Director of Homeless Healthcare for Harry Tompson Health Services, and Executive Director of the Spirit of Charity Foundation.

“In each role that he plays – whether it’s doctor, teacher or administrator– Dr. DeBlieux is always about the patient,” Masterton said. “This new role gives him more time and responsibility to do what he is best at and most passionate about, and it has a number of benefits for our patients and hospital.”

DeBlieux received his medical degree at LSU Health Sciences Center, where he also completed an internship in Internal Medicine and a residency in Emergency Medicine. He completed his fellowship in Pulmonary and Critical Care Medicine with LSU at Charity Hospital.
