University Medical Center to Host Free Stop the Bleed Training at Kermit’s Mother-in-Law Lounge

NEW ORLEANS, LA –University Medical Center New Orleans is hosting it's next “Stop the Bleed” bleeding control course at Kermit’s Treme Mother-in-Law Lounge on Monday, October 16, from 5:30-7:30 PM.

The course will teach community members simple tourniquet application and bleeding control techniques to treat life-threatening bleeding injuries in the event of an emergency.

“The only thing more tragic than a death is a death that could have been prevented,” said Jennifer Avegno, MD, an Associate Professor of Emergency Medicine at LSU Health New Orleans and an Emergency physician at University Medical Center. “Our goal is to train everyone – especially non-medical personnel – with the basic skills needed to identify and control life-threatening bleeding in any situation.”

Live music and free food will be provided courtesy of Kermit Ruffins and the Mother-in-Law Lounge, located at 1500 N. Claiborne Ave in New Orleans. All are welcome to attend this event, sponsored by University Medical Center, CeaseFire New Orleans, the Spirit of Charity Foundation, and LSU Health New Orleans, and Tulane University School of Medicine.

Stop the Bleed is a national campaign developed by the Department of Homeland Security and the American College of Surgeons in 2015. University Medical Center has since localized the program as part of its commitment to being a pioneer in injury prevention.

“Since the program started, University Medical Center has trained nearly 1,000 of our neighbors, colleagues, and friends,” said Rebecca Schroll, MD, an Assistant Professor of Clinical Surgery at Tulane University School of Medicine and University Medical Center trauma surgeon. “We hope to not only lead the nation in celebrating life but in saving it, too.”

The course is a joint venture between University Medical Center, LSU Health New Orleans, and Tulane University School of Medicine. It is supported by a grant from the Spirit of Charity Foundation. The training program aims to equip and empower anyone to help in a bleeding emergency before professional help arrives. Like bystander CPR, early bleeding control in injured patients can save lives before arrival at a hospital.

Free classes are hosted every other Monday in the University Medical Center Conference Center Room D from 11 a.m. to 12 p.m. The classes at University Medical Center are taught by physicians and residents from LSU and Tulane.
