Press Release: University Medical Center New Orleans to Host Breast Health Lunch Lecture Series

(NEW ORLEANS) – About one in eight women in the United States will develop invasive breast cancer during their lifetime, and New Orleans has one of the highest breast cancer death rates in the state, according to the Louisiana Breast and Cervical Health Program. University Medical Center (University Medical Center) New Orleans is helping to shed light on this disease by offering a series of bi-monthly lunch lectures featuring experts in breast health.

The Lunch Lecture Series on Breast Health will provide a wide variety of educational topics across many aspects of breast health and the latest treatment options for breast cancer throughout the year. The lectures are free and open to the community, patients, hospital staff, and faculty and will be followed by a brief Q&A session.

The first lunch lecture, Surgical Management of Breast Cancer, will be held on Wednesday, June 22 from 12 – 1 p.m. in the University Medical Center New Orleans Conference Center, Rooms D and E. Adam I. Riker, MD, FACS, LSU Health New Orleans, will provide attendees with helpful information on surgical management such as determining factors for surgery, types of surgery, lymph node removal, lumpectomy, mastectomy, and breast-conserving surgeries. Lunch will be provided and a Q&A session will follow.

Komen New Orleans, will give participants a better understanding of breast health and the resources available to those affected by breast cancer – from prevention to treatment and more.”

In addition to the bi-monthly lunch lectures, University Medical Center New Orleans will host a Breast Health and Cancer Symposium on Saturday, October 1, 2016, in honor of Breast Cancer Awareness Month. The symposium will be a day filled with various breast cancer experts discussing topics such as research and clinical trials, screening, genetics, treatment options, and more.
