Postgraduate Year Two Infectious Diseases Pharmacy Residency

University Medical Center New Orleans offers a 52 week training postgraduate year two (PGY-2) Infectious Diseases Pharmacy Residency program with extensive experience that foster the development of proficiency in antimicrobial stewardship and infectious diseases pharmacotherapy. Our rotations include a mix of focused and longitudinal experiences spanning both the inpatient and outpatient settings.

  • ASP/ Infectious Diseases Consult at partner hospitals
  • Academia
Longitudinal Responsibilities
  • Research project to be presented at an infectious diseases conference
  • Clinical in-house coverage every third weekend and designated holidays
  • Participation in practice management and administration, including medication use evaluation projects
  • Antimicrobial Stewardship & Pharmacy and Therapeutics Committees involvement
  • Education to medical and pharmacy staff

Infectious Diseases Pharmacy Residency Stipend and Benefits

Residents receive a stipend of $52,000, as well as comprehensive health insurance, accrual of Paid Time Off (PTO) for sick and vacation days, 7 recognized holidays, and professional travel reimbursement

Infectious Diseases Pharmacy Residency Eligibility Requirements

Applicants to the Infectious Diseases Pharmacy Residency program must:

  • Be a graduate of an ACPE accredited Doctor of Pharmacy degree program or have a Foreign Pharmacy Graduate Examination Committee (FPGEC) certificate from the NABP
  • Have completed or be in the process of completing a PGY1 pharmacy residency program
  • Meet requirements for employment at University Medical Center New Orleans
  • All applicants must provide proof of proper work authorization. Because of timeliness and competition, applicants are not eligible for VISA Sponsorship.
  • Be licensed or eligible for licensure by the Louisiana Board of Pharmacy

Infectious Diseases Pharmacy Residency Application Process

Within the residency program, one PGY-2 position is open for application per year. This program utilizes the Pharmacy-Online Residency Centralized Application Service (PhORCAS) and participates in the American Society of Health-System Pharmacists (ASHP) Resident Matching Program. The resident matching program code is 72953.

Applicants must submit the following application materials through PhORCAS by January 3:

  • Official college of pharmacy transcript
  • Curriculum vitae
  • Three references submitted through PhORCAS
    • A minimum of one of the three references must come from a residency program director, or supervisor the candidate has worked with in a hospital pharmacy setting. Additionally, at least one reference should come from a preceptor within a clinical setting.
  • A personal statement describing goals and interests, motivation for pursuing a PGY-2 Infectious Diseases Pharmacy Residency, and reasoning for interest in UMCNO’s program.

Selection process

Pre-interview

The applicant’s curriculum vitae, letters of recommendation, academic records, and completed application form through PhORCAS will be carefully evaluated to determine the suitability of the candidate for an interview.

On-site interview

Interviews for Phase I of the match are on-site, and applicants should be prepared to assume the travel and lodging costs for the interview, as UMCNO does not provide compensation for the interview process. Interviews will be conducted in the months of January and February. If other arrangements are needed, the candidate must coordinate with the Residency Program Director (RPD).

Post-interview

Candidates who completed an interview will be considered for ranking. The ASHP Resident Matching Program is used to complete and submit the final rank list. In the event of an unmatched position, UMCNO will participate in Phase II and Post Match process.

The residency start date will be communicated in the contract provided upon matching.
