About Rev. Avery C. Alexander
Rev. Alexander was an important figure in the Civil Rights movement. He was a longtime member of the Louisiana House of Representatives and a prominent community leader who fought for better healthcare for the poor. Charity Hospital, which long served as the region’s safety net hospital prior to its closure following damage from Hurricane Katrina, had also been named in Rev. Alexander's honor.
Transition and transformation
In 2013, LCMC Health finalized a partnership with the State of Louisiana to operate the former Interim LSU Hospital and the future University Medical Center New Orleans.. In August 2015, we began the next chapter in our history with the opening of the state-of-the-art, $1.2 billion University Medical Center. We look forward to carrying on our legacy and becoming an epicenter of medical care, education and research for the coming decades and beyond.
