Women's Sports Medicine

For active women of all ages

Whether you’re an elite or student athlete, or just enjoy running, dancing or playing hard in your spare time, our women’s sports medicine program is designed for you.

The psychological response to injury can significantly affect outcomes and return to play. Psychological effects are different for women than for men, and women may need a different approach in communication and treatment.

— Mary Mulcahey, MD, Director, Women’s Sports Medicine, Tulane Institute of Sports Medicine

Women are at risk for injuries and conditions that may be overlooked in a traditional sports medicine setting. They also respond and heal differently than men, and may have different concerns when they’re injured.

Our specialists understand these differences and are experienced in diagnosing, treating and caring for active women. We can help you reduce risks, heal from injuries and prevent health problems, and we have all the resources you need for your physical and mental health. We can help you perform safely at your best and enjoy your active lifestyle.

Did You Know? Female athletes in some sports are at risk for the “female athlete triad”: Eating disorders, amenorrhea (loss of periods) and osteoporosis (decreased bone density). Our team knows the signs and how to prevent and treat these conditions.
