Vascular and Endovascular Care
Vascular disease is a class of cardiovascular diseases that affects blood vessels, which include the arteries and veins of the circulatory system. Disorders of the blood vessels can cause a range of health problems, including heart disease and stroke. Our team of vascular specialists provide consultation, diagnosis and non-invasive treatment for disease and disorders of the arteries and veins. We collaborate with primary care physicians, podiatrists, vascular surgeons, patients and their families to ensure the best care and treatment for vascular conditions.
In partnership with the Tulane University Heart and Vascular Institute, our endovascular experts perform interventions that repair blocked or diseased vasculature and increase blood flow in affected areas. Through re-vascularization, we have been successful in helping patients save limbs affected by trauma, injury and advanced vascular disease.
Common vascular conditions we treat include:
- Peripheral arterial disease
- Carotid artery stenosis
- Renal artery stenosis
- Abdominal aortic aneurysms
- Vasculitis
- Venous problems such as deep venous thrombosis
- Varicose and spider veins
Several factors may increase your likelihood of developing vascular disease, including:
- Family history of vascular or heart disease
- Smoking
- Diabetes
- Obesity (a body mass index higher than 30)
- High blood pressure
- High cholesterol
- Long periods of sitting or standing still
Limb preservation program
Peripheral artery disease is a disorder caused by blockage in the arteries of the lower extremities that reduces blood flow. It affects approximately 18 million Americans and, left untreated, can lead to critical limb ischemia, which in turn leads to amputation.
The number of amputations performed annually in the United States is estimated to be more than 160,000, and more than 50 percent of these patients had no diagnostic or therapeutic endovascular intervention performed in the year before an amputation.
Our program coordinates care among primary care physicians, infectious disease specialists, podiatric specialists, vascular medicine specialists (interventional cardiologists, radiologists and vascular surgeons), as well as wound care specialists to prevent amputations.
We offer the most advanced techniques for treating limb-threatening conditions, such as:
- Diabetic foot ulcers
- Advanced peripheral artery disease
- Acute and chronic infections/osteomyelitis
- Gangrene
Treatments offered include:
- Medical and surgical treatment of foot infections
- Wound care and specialized dressings
- Revascularization (angioplasty, stents, atherectomy and bypass surgery)
- Shoe modifications (extra-depth, rocker sole design and custom molded insoles)
- Plastic surgical procedures for wound coverage including skin grafts and tissue transfers
- Diabetes management and cardiovascular risk-factor reduction
