Radiation Oncology
In the hands of trained specialists, radiation is a powerful tool in the
fight against cancer and other medical conditions. In fact, about half
of all U.S. patients diagnosed with cancer are treated with radiation
therapy, in which powerful doses of radiation are delivered with incredible
precision and the highest level of safety. Often, radiation therapy is
combined with other treatment types – such as surgery and chemotherapy
– to provide the most successful outcomes.
The Cancer Center’s radiation oncology team is committed to ensuring the quality of the therapy we deliver. The department is accredited by the American College of Radiology and all treatments are monitored by an experienced team. We also combine the unique resources of our skilled physicians and staff with the research and education opportunities offered by the Tulane University School of Medicine to create individualized treatment plans using the most advanced technologies.
Our radiation oncology program offers:
- Intensity-Modulated Radiation Therapy (IMRT): This advanced treatment technique allows higher sparing of healthy tissues while simultaneously enabling the delivery of larger levels of radiation to the area of treatment.
- Image-Guided Radiation Therapy (IGRT): This imaging technique aids extremely accurate targeting of the cancer during each treatment.
- Stereotactic Radio-Surgery (SRS): This highly specialized radiation therapy is used primarily for precision brain treatments.
- Stereotactic Body Radiation Therapy (SBRT): This specialized radiation therapy is used for precision lung and liver treatments.
- Total Body Irradiation (TBI): This treatment procedure is used to prepare a body for bone marrow transplant.
- High Dose-Rate (HDR) Brachytherapy: This is an innovative treatment technique for temporary placement of a radiation source either inside or adjacent to the area requiring treatment to ensure maximum radiation to the cancer.
- 4D-CT Imaging: This advanced imaging technique captures both a cancer’s location and its motion due to breathing and is used in treatment planning of cancers in or near the lungs.
- Xofigo Injections: This may be a beneficial treatment for men who have prostate cancer that has spread to their bones only. This form of cancer is often resistant to other treatments and may show response to these radioactive injections.
