The Touro Diabetes Center provides a comprehensive program of educational services and support to individuals and groups. The Diabetes Center works closely with physicians to identify each patient’s specific needs and to help them develop the self-management skills needed to control their disease.
Educational sessions include:
- An overview of diabetes (Type 1 and 2, gestational)
- Meal planning and weight control
- Blood glucose monitoring
- Medication management
- Exercise benefits and precautions
- Stress management
- Prevention, detection and treatment of complications
- Foot, skin and dental care
- Sick day management
- Managing acute diabetes emergencies
The educators in the Touro Diabetes Center are certified through the National Certification Board of Diabetes Educators and the American Diabetes Association recognizes this program as meeting the national standards for diabetes self-management education. Our team also includes a licensed, registered dietitian to help coach patients through meal planning and weight control.
Insurance coverage & scheduling your first appointment
To receive outpatient diabetes education, a physician’s order needs
to be completed, signed, and faxed to the Diabetes Center. The Diabetes
Center staff will contact the patient to schedule their first appointment.
Medicare and most other insurance plans cover diabetes education and support
services when medically necessary. Co-pays and deductibles may apply.
The Diabetes Center also accepts private pay patients.
