Chemotherapy treatment
Chemotherapy is one of the most common cancer treatment options and involves the use of medicines to treat cancer. With more than 100 chemotherapy drugs available, they can be used individually or in various combinations. You and your doctor will work together to choose which drug or combination of drugs will be used, as well as your dosages, frequency, and length of treatment. Chemotherapy can be used to cure cancer, slow its growth, keep it from spreading, relieve the symptoms caused by it, and kill cancer cells that may have spread to other parts of your body from the original tumor. Chemotherapy has many temporary side effects, such as hair loss, dry mouth, bleeding, fatigue, and more.
Examples of different forms of chemotherapy include:
- Intravenous (IV): This form of chemo is injected into a vein using a needle. This allows for the rapid distribution of the drugs throughout your entire body.
- Topical: This form of chemotherapy is applied to your skin and used for treating localized skin cancers.
- Oral: This form of chemo is swallowed as a pill.
- Injections: This form of chemotherapy uses a needle to inject drugs directly into a muscle or in a cancerous area.
Scalp cooling system cancer treatment
One negative side effect of chemotherapy is hair loss, but the Paxman Scalp Cooling System is designed to help chemotherapy patients retain their hair. Touro is proud to be the first hospital in Louisiana to offer this system. All you have to do is wear a special cap before, during, and after your chemo treatments. Ask us about this effective way to save your hair during chemotherapy.
