What inpatient rehabilitation is, and how it works

What inpatient rehabilitation is, and how it works

In many cases, rehabilitation services, such as physical therapy, are received in an outpatient setting. However, inpatient rehabilitation may be needed when an illness or injury is particularly severe.

Inpatient rehab offers a different level of rehabilitation care than therapy received on an outpatient basis. Because therapy sessions are held in an inpatient setting, such as at an acute care hospital or an inpatient rehabilitation facility, patients can receive focused, intensive therapy that helps them recover more thoroughly and quickly.

When our community requires inpatient rehabilitation, they can receive the highest level of care here at home. Touro Rehabilitation Center has been recognized for excellence among rehabilitation hospitals across the country, providing our patients with the advanced therapy services they need to lead active and fulfilling lives.

When inpatient rehabilitation is needed

When recovering after a knee replacement, you can usually get the physical therapy you need in an outpatient setting. However, patients with more complex needs can benefit from receiving rehabilitation services in an inpatient setting.

At Touro, we provide inpatient rehabilitation services for patients with a variety of acute health needs, including those recovering after a brain injury, spinal cord injury, the loss of a limb or a stroke. We also provide this level of care for patients facing a chronic or progressive health condition, such as Parkinson’s disease or arthritis.

When patients are receiving inpatient rehabilitation services, they benefit from being in the hospital setting at Touro. Patients have around-the-clock attention, with specialized hospitalists on site to offer care for acute or urgent needs.

The different types of rehabilitation

Our team of board-certified rehabilitation physicians collaborates with other Touro specialists to create personalized treatment plans. Every patient’s health needs are unique. Patients may receive physical therapy, occupational therapy, speech-language pathology or a combination of therapies, depending on their specific recovery needs and abilities.

  • Physical therapy is a type of rehabilitation focused on recovering or gaining physical abilities, including mobility, gait, range of motion and strength.
  • Occupational therapy is a type of rehabilitation that focuses on helping patients perform activities of daily living, such as bathing, dressing and eating.
  • Speech-language pathology is rehabilitation focused on helping patients overcome difficulties communicating, speaking or swallowing.

Touro Rehabilitation Center offers a full spectrum of rehabilitation services tailored to each patient’s needs. In 2021, Newsweek recognized these specialized services when it ranked us No. 1 on the list of America’s Best Physical Rehab Centers.

Transitioning after inpatient rehabilitation

To participate in inpatient rehabilitation, you must be able to complete three hours of therapy per day, no less than five days per week, and need a level of rehabilitation care that cannot be provided in another medical setting.

When patients have progressed through inpatient rehab and are ready to transition to a less-intensive level of care, Touro case managers will work with them, their family caregivers and medical providers to determine the best next step. This may include discharge to the home setting, an assisted living community or nursing homes.

Once discharged from inpatient rehabilitation, patients may continue to receive rehabilitation services on an outpatient basis at a Skilled Nursing Facility (SNF), more commonly called a nursing home, or in the home environment aided by home health.

When patients transition out of inpatient rehabilitation, we work with them to make sure they have family or other social support, along with a clear and realistic plan for continuing care. We’re committed to helping our patients experience the best possible outcome.

Have peace of mind in knowing that you can receive high-quality inpatient rehabilitation close to home. Touro Rehabilitation Center is here to help.
