July ___, 2021 - Today, the “Get NOEH Fit: Healthy You, Healthy Me” initiative announced the launch of a new Diabetes-Friendly Menu Program, aimed at helping the New Orleans community make health-conscious decisions when dining out at participating restaurants. “Healthy You, Healthy Me” initiative is a joint effort between the Rhesa & Alden J. McDonald and Sue Ellen & Joseph Canizaro Diabetes Center (Diabetes Center) at New Orleans East Hospital (NOEH) and the Goldring Family Foundation Center for Jewish-Multicultural Affairs (CJMA), an in-house initiative of the Jewish Federation of Greater New Orleans (Federation).
Restaurants participating in the Diabetes-Friendly Menu Program work closely with the diabetic care team from the NOEH Diabetes Center to curate menu items that meet certain dietary standards. As of the date of this announcement, diabetes-friendly specials are available at The Blue Flamingo, Li'l Dizzy's (on Wednesdays), Backatown Coffee Parlour, We Dat's, Dooky Chase, and Salads Galore, with dozens more expected to join the program in the upcoming months.
Dr. Takeisha Davis, MPH, NOEH President and CEO said: “On behalf of New Orleans East Hospital, I am extremely proud to announce this newest addition to Get NOEH Fit, our flagship community health program. With “Healthy You, Healthy Me” and its Diabetes-Friendly Menu Program, not only are we bringing much needed action against the chronic illnesses plaguing our minority communities, we are also supporting our minority-owned businesses that have been disproportionately affected by the pandemic. Our goal is to bring the ideals of healthy living into the home, and with most families eating out at increasing rates we must be intentional about taking into account the reality that restaurants are an extension of the family kitchen.”
The “Get NOEH Fit: Healthy You, Healthy Me” program emphasizes, among other important topics, prevention and care of diabetes and other diseases that disproportionately affect minority communities, healthy meal preparation and eating habits, and the role of exercise and physical activity in improving wellness. The initiative has featured healthy holiday recipes and cooking
demonstrations from Edgar Chase IV (Dooky Chase’s), Alon Shaya (Saba), and James Cullen (Lil Dizzy’s Cafe), wellness tips from registered dieticians, and now the Diabetes-Friendly Restaurant Menu program.
