3D mammography
Early detection is the best defense against breast cancer. Lakeview Hospital has the latest state-of-the-art screening tool— digital breast tomosynthesis—to help detect cancer in its early stages. How it works:
- Digital breast images are converted into a stack of very thin layers or “slices” by using high-powered computing — building what is essentially a three dimensional mammogram.
- During the tomosynthesis part of the exam, an x-ray arm will sweep in a slight arc over the breast taking multiple breast images in just seconds. A computer then produces a 3D image of breast tissue in one-millimeter layers.
- Never has it been possible for the radiologist to see breast tissue in detail. The doctor can examine the tissue a millimeter at a time instead of viewing the complexities of breast tissue in a flat image. Fine details are more clearly visible, no longer hidden by the tissue above and below. With 3D breast imaging, there are fewer false positives.
