"Stop the bleed" community outreach class

Uncontrolled bleeding is the No. 1 cause of preventable death from trauma. The only thing more tragic than a death from bleeding is a death that could have been prevented. In response to the recent tragedy in Las Vegas, Lakeview Hospital , a campus of Tulane Medical Center, will offer a "Stop the Bleed" community outreach class that gives participants general knowledge and resources to provide lifesaving care when seconds count. The odds of survival improve significantly if bleeding is stopped within five minutes of sustaining a penetrating injury.

This free program, taking place from 9-11 a.m. on Oct. 12, will teach the importance of stopping the bleed. Participants will learn how to identify the source of bleeding, look for life-threatening injuries, and learn basic life-saving medical interventions including bleeding control with direct pressure, bleeding control with gauze packs, packing a wound, and bleeding control with a tourniquet. Each participant will also have an opportunity to perform each skill.

"Stop the Bleed" is a nationwide campaign aimed at educating first responders and the general public on how to stop severe bleeding and potentially save lives in an emergency.
