Eye exams for healthy eyes

A regular eye exam is a great way to keep those eyes healthy. Most people benefit from annual exams. Even if you don’t normally wear glasses or contact lenses, an eye exam lets your optometrist or ophthalmologist check for any signs of problems. We look for vision changes and common eye disorders, such as glaucoma or macular degeneration.

Some eye disorders can lead to blindness when left untreated. The earlier we diagnose and treat an eye condition, the more likely treatment will be effective.

Optometrist vs. ophthalmologist

When you choose Lakeside Hospital for your eye care, you work with a team of eye care specialists. We have both optometrists and ophthalmologists on staff. So, what’s the difference?

  • Optometrists are doctors of optometry (OD). They specialize in eye care, offer eye exams, and diagnose and treat many eye disorders.
  • Ophthalmologists are medical doctors (MD) or osteopathic doctors (OD). Like optometrists, they specialize in eye care. But they also do complex eye surgery. Your ophthalmologist likely specializes in a disease or part of the eye, such as a cornea specialist.

Eye safety tips to protect your peepers

Your mom’n’em was right when they told you to protect your eyes. Without proper protection, you can have an eye injury or strain. Some people are more likely to have eye problems, too—especially if you have conditions like diabetes or high blood pressure, you have a family history of eye disease, or you wear contacts or had eye surgery.

Here are some basic eye safety tips:

  • Be careful with cosmetics, especially if you wear contacts.
  • See your eye doctor regularly and call them right away if you have an eye injury.
  • Take breaks from the computer and other screens.
  • Wash your hands before touching in or near your eye.
  • Wear glasses if you need them.
  • Wear goggles or protective glasses when working with chemicals or machines, playing sports, or doing an activity that could damage the eyes.
  • Wear sunglasses when in the sun.
