Lakeside Hospital maintains "A" safety rating

This week, Lakeside Hospital was awarded its 6th consecutive “A” rating from The Leapfrog Group, an independent hospital quality watchdog. The designation recognizes Tulane Lakeside’s longstanding efforts in protecting patients from errors, injuries, accidents and infections.

The Leapfrog Hospital Safety Grade assigns an “A,” “B,” “C,” “D,” or “F” grade to all general hospitals across the country and is updated every six months. It is the only hospital ratings program based exclusively on hospitals’ prevention of medical errors and other harms to patients in their care.

“So much has changed over the last year, but one thing that remains the same is our commitment to patient safety,” said Tom Patrias, CEO of Tulane Health System. “This award from Leapfrog is a reflection of our ongoing commitment to providing our community and patients with the safe, quality, and compassionate care they deserve.”

Lakeside Hospital, as part of Tulane Health System, continues to implement several measures to ensure the safety of its patients and staff during the COVID-19 pandemic, including screening all patients and visitors, socially distant waiting areas, universal masking of caregivers and patients within our facilities, and heightened infection prevention protocols.

“An “A” safety grade is an elite designation that your community should be proud of,” said Leah Binder, president and CEO of The Leapfrog Group. “The past year has been extraordinarily difficult for hospitals, but Lakeside Hospital shows us it is possible to keep a laser focus on patients and their safety, no matter what it takes.”

The Leapfrog Group is an independent national watchdog organization committed to health care quality and safety. The Leapfrog Hospital Safety Grade assigns a grade to all general hospitals across the country every six months and is the only hospital ratings program based exclusively on hospitals’ prevention of medical errors and other harms to patients in their care. Developed under the guidance of a national expert panel, the Leapfrog Hospital Safety Grade uses up to 27 measures of publicly available hospital safety data to assign grades to more than 2,700 U.S. acute-care hospitals twice per year. The Hospital Safety Grade’s methodology is peer-reviewed and fully transparent, and the results are free to the public.

Tulane Medical Center maintained its “B” safety rating with Leapfrog Group. In 2020, Tulane Health System also earned a World’s Best Hospital designation for the second-consecutive year. Additionally, Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Louisiana named Tulane Health System a Blue Distinction Center+ for Knee and Hip Replacement.
