About Dr. Leithead, III

I am a native of Lake Charles, Louisiana, and received my undergraduate degree from Louisiana State University and my medical degree from Louisiana State University Health Sciences Center in New Orleans. I remained in New Orleans to complete my general surgery residency at LSU.

Following residency, I moved to Miami, where I completed a fellowship in Minimally Invasive Surgery, with a focus on advanced laparoscopic bariatric, general, and colorectal procedures. I am certified in the use of robotic technology for minimally invasive surgery and am board certified by the American Board of Surgery. I am also a Fellow of both the American College of Surgeons and the American Society for Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery.

After completing my surgical training under many pioneers in the field, I returned to New Orleans and joined Surgical Specialists of Louisiana. I am excited to now partner with OLOLPG and continue caring for my community. I am deeply devoted to patient well-being, satisfaction, and exceptional outcomes, and I am committed to providing personalized, compassionate care for all surgical needs.

My honors include being named Most Outstanding Overall Fifth Year Resident, receiving the Professor’s Award for Overall Excellence in Clinical Performance, and earning the Paul R. Hastings Award for Excellence in Critical Care.

I specialize in the minimally invasive treatment of obesity, colorectal conditions, and general surgical diseases, including hernias, gallbladder pathology, and gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD). I have a strong interest in laparoscopic and robotic surgery, allowing me to offer patients the latest advances in surgical technology.
