About this Location
Welcome to the Emergency Room in Metairie, LA
We deal with the toughest, most urgent cases in our emergency room. Metairie, LA area residents should always be prepared in the event of an emergency. Follow these guidelines if you or someone you know has been injured.
Responding to an Emergency: Call 911
Stay calm. The first and best thing you can do is to remain calm. Call 911. If someone else is with you, who is not injured, ask that person to call 911.
If you can, have the following information available:
- The address or location of the injured person
- A call back number
- A brief description of the injuries or illness
- The number of people injured
If the person is injured in a car accident and there is no immediate danger, such as fire, do not move them. Unnecessary movement can cause additional injuries. If the injured person is not breathing, the 911 Operator can walk you through CPR instructions over the phone. Do not hang up until the dispatcher ends the conversation.
Emergency Department (ED)
East Jefferson General Hospital Emergency Department is known for its efficiency, quality diagnosticians and superior emergency management. EJGH’s state-of-the art facility encompasses 18 private rooms, and 33 beds total. In addition, our ED has earned a reputation for excellence due to innovative procedures and digital technologies such as the Computerized Physician Order Entry (CPOE) which allows doctors to automatically update patient charts, collaborate with other physicians and immediately notify nurses of any changes in treatment course.
One recent enhancement that is changing the way many perceive a trip to the ER is our Geaux Zone. The Geaux Zone allows patients who have been triaged with having minor ailments (and not needing to be placed in a bed or on a monitor) to be treated and released more quickly and efficiently while allowing more resources to be available to the seriously ill or injured.
In 2015, plans have been approved for the expansion of the EJGH Emergency Department enabling us to treat an even higher volume of patients. In addition to more space, this addition will give us more designated space for treating those with mental disorders who present in our ED.
In fact, City Business Magazine recognized East Jefferson’s Emergency Department as an Innovator of the Year for implementing the CPOE throughout the department. Our ED has also won a number of awards from the American Heart Association and others related to our exemplary care for those with heart attacks and strokes.
By streamlining processes through technology and utilizing best practices in triage, our elite cadre of nurses and physicians, certified in Trauma Care, treat approximately 52,000 patients every year, almost all of whom are seen within 30 minutes of arrival to EJGH’s ED.
The privacy and confidentiality of our patients is very important to us. Therefore, we ask that visitors are limited to one person per room. Under special circumstances, more than one visitor may be allowed in a room. In this case, the primary visitor will be given a visitor pass, which can be exchanged with another visitor at any time.
