No need to go it alone: Build a breastfeeding support system

No need to go it alone: Build a breastfeeding support system

Medical and professional organizations worldwide agree mother’s milk is the perfect food for babies. A mother’s body is designed to make milk and to make what it needs for her baby. August is National Breastfeeding Month, which focuses on spreading the word about breastfeeding's benefits. That’s why we’re sharing advice about breastfeeding and where breastfeeding moms can turn for support in reaching their breastfeeding goals.

East Jefferson General Hospital lactation consultants are here to help you succeed.

The American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) recommends “exclusive breastfeeding for approximately 6 months after birth, followed by continued breastfeeding, with complementary foods for at least 2 years and beyond, as long as mutually desired.”

Every drop of breast milk is packed with nutrients, antibodies and other immune factors only the mother can make. Breastfed babies have fewer health concerns, with a reduced risk of eczema, ear infections, sudden infant death syndrome or SIDS, and respiratory illnesses during childhood. They are also less likely to become overweight later in life or to develop Type 2 diabetes.

Breastfeeding mothers also benefit from reduced risks of heart disease, breast cancer, ovarian cancer and Type 2 diabetes. Breastfeeding also helps the mother’s body release oxytocin, which causes her uterus to contract, reducing bleeding after the baby is born.

The challenges of breastfeeding

Three out of four mothers choose to breastfeed their babies. The Lactation Consultants at East Jefferson General Hospital are here to help you get off to a good start so you can leave the hospital feeling confident and successful.

Although the newborn period can be exhausting, it’s also a rewarding time for you and your infant as you get to know each other and fall in love.

Where to find breastfeeding support

Whether you are planning for the birth of your baby or enjoying those newborn days, it’s the right time to seek breastfeeding support. Know that you aren’t alone. Support and resources are available to help you overcome concerns, most of which can be prevented.

During your pregnancy, you can participate in prenatal classes at East Jefferson General Hospital, which focus on many topics, including breastfeeding basics. These classes will provide pointers on positioning your baby to nurse and how to ensure a proper latch. You’ll also learn how to tell when your baby is ready to eat and to know when your baby is getting enough to eat.

Our dedicated team of lactation consultants is here to provide you with personalized information and support. They are available before the arrival of your baby, during your hospital stay, and even after you return home.

We also encourage new moms to reach out to their social network. While it may seem some moms effortlessly navigate breastfeeding, the reality is that most have faced challenges. Talking with friends and family about their experiences can help you feel connected and understood and build a strong support network.

Are you looking to connect with other new moms? We also offer a monthly breastfeeding support group on the first Wednesday of each month, where you can get advice, share experiences, and build a strong support network.

Are you preparing for a new addition to the family? East Jefferson General Hospital offers care for both mom and baby and classes, including prenatal series, breastfeeding, newborn essentials, grandparents, CPR and Safe Sitter.
