Podiatric Medicine and Surgery Residency Program

The Podiatric Medicine and Surgery Residency Program prepares physician to provide palliative and surgical care for illnesses relating to the foot and ankle.

Based in a community hospital, the program provides training in a variety of inpatient and outpatient areas. Not only do residents care for patients in the hospital setting, they also have the advantage of working at local surgery centers and Podiatrists’ offices.

About the Program

The Podiatry Residency Program welcomed its first resident in 1989. The program is approved by the Council on Podiatric Medical Education (CPME). The program is currently approved as a PMS-36 with the added Credential for Reconstructive Rearfoot / Ankle Surgery.

For the first year of the three-year program, much of the training is hospital based. The rotation schedules allow for surgery in the morning and podiatric or off-service rotations in the afternoon. Residents spend time in private podiatry practices where patient care management and office management experience is obtained. Residents are exposed to many podiatric and MD teaching faculty to draw on a wide variety of clinical and surgical experiences.

Podiatry Residency Program Benefits

Health Insurance
The Hospital offers two Health Insurance plans to choose from to provide affordable, quality care to meet your health care needs and those of your family. Prescription drug benefits are included.
Basic Health – Includes HIGHER deductibles and co-pays
HealthPlus – Includes LOWER deductibles and co-pays

Dental/Vision Insurance
This plan provides dental coverage for preventative, basic and major services and vision coverage that includes annual eye exams and discounted glasses/lens. A vision buy-up program is available at an additional cost.

Team Member Assistance Program
Provides confidential, professional assistance to help Team Members resolve issues that affect their personal lives or job performance. Team members receive 3 free sessions upon beginning the program.

Medical Flexible Spending Account (FSA)
Allows you to use pre-tax dollars to set up a savings account to pay medical expenses that are not reimbursed by our health, dental or vision plans.

In-house CE Programming and Professional Development
The Hospital offers ongoing continuing education workshops and professional development courses for both clinical and non-clinical Team Members.

Meal cards
Meal cards are provided to help defer the cost of meals while on duty. The allowance provided is $125.00 per month.

Jefferson Parish Federal Employees Credit Union – On-Site Office
Savings, checking accounts and loans are available through payroll deductions. Application required to join. ATM on site. Night deposit available.

Direct Deposit
All payroll checks must be deposited directly to your bank account or credit union account. Forms are available in Payroll.

Paid Vacation
You will receive three weeks paid vacation for the first year of residency, four weeks paid vacation for the second and third year. Unused vacation days DO NOT roll over to the following year.

Reimbursements
You will be reimbursed for the following expenses:

  • Exam preparation (including travel expenses) - third year resident
  • Interview/recruitment trips – second year resident
  • Purchase of two lab coats
  • BLS and ACLS courses
  • State License fee
  • Board exam fees

Education Funds
You will receive $1000 for the first and second year of residency, which must be used per calendar year.

Access to Resident / Fellow Lounge
The lounge is located on the first floor of the hospital and features computer stations, TV, kitchenette and other amenities.
