Program Structure & Rotations

Pharmacy Residency Structure

The PGY1 Pharmacy Residency is a 12-month long program. Each resident’s first rotation will be orientation and training in the drug distribution service components of the Department of Pharmacy Services. The December rotation is designated for the attendance at the ASHP midyear Clinical Meeting, assistance in the recruitment of future residents, project activities, completing assignments and assisting in the staffing areas as needed.

At a minimum, the resident spends two thirds or more of their time involved in direct patient care activities. The practice model integrates discussion and clinical activities at the patient care level and is supported by decentralize drug distribution. Clinical pharmacists, cover all acute patient care areas and select ambulatory care clinics.

Residents contribute to many clinical activities including collection of data for Drug Utilization Evaluations (DUEs), in-services to the staff (e.g., pharmacist, technicians, nurses, physicians) during their clinical rotations, and medication education to inpatient-outpatients. In addition to clinical services, the residents serve as preceptors throughout the year to pharmacy students completing their clinical clerkships.

Throughout the year, resident serve on the Antibiotic Stewardship Committee, EJGH and Therapeutics committee.. LCMC Pharmacy and Therapeutics committee, and other related committee. The formal aspects of the Pharmacy and therapeutics committee are coordinated by the clinical Pharmacy manger, and residents have an opportunity to present to the various committees.

* Note: The required learning experiences must add up to 2/3 of the program in direct patient care. A combination of required patient care experiences and additional required patient care made by selecting additional patient care learning experiences. No more than one non-patient care experience can be taken in any given residency year.
**These are elective rotations that are available at other LCMC hospitals. With advance notice, all efforts will be made to accommodate the residents’ elective choices.
