5 ways to avoid winter weight gain this year

Picture this: Spring arrives. The days are getting longer again, and you’re ready to pull out those fresh outfits for the warmer weather. One pair of pants in particular made you look your best at many festivals last summer. You try them on, but—the zipper won’t zip. Your pants no longer fit, thanks to a common phenomenon known as “winter weight gain.”

Many people gain at least a little weight during the winter. The shorter days and longer nights mean we spend less time outdoors being active. Colder weather often deters physical activity, especially outdoor workouts. And the winter months can mess with your sleep routine and lead to poor food choices.

So, what can you do to keep off those extra pounds? LCMC Health shares five tips for staying healthy and stopping winter weight gain.

1. Fuel your body in a healthy way

When it’s cold and gray outside, it’s only natural to turn to comfort foods. But the high-calorie grub doesn’t help your body. Instead of rich etouffees and sweet beignets, try foods that curb your cravings in a healthier way. Go for in-season fruits and vegetables, paired with lean protein and a hearty dash of NOLA seasoning. Tempt your tastebuds without adding to your waistline.

2. Eat whole foods instead of processed foods when you can

Look at the nutrition label for the foods you eat. It’s best to choose whole foods as much as possible. Think fruits and veggies, nuts and seeds, lean cuts of meat, and whole grains. When you eat packaged foods, look for items that have fewer ingredients. And steer clear of food with added sugar, extra sodium, and saturated and trans fats.

3. Make water your drink of choice

Proper hydration can help you stay energized throughout the day. Water offers a satisfying, no-calorie way to curb your thirst. Flavor it with fruit or a sprig of mint if that’s your thing. An occasional glass of unsweetened tea or a cup of black coffee is fine, but make water your main beverage.

4. Get moving

While it may be more challenging this time of year to find the oomph you need to exercise, it’s so important. Stay active to be your healthiest and avoid unwanted weight gain. Take advantage of milder temperatures and explore options to get outside in New Orleans.

5. Revamp your sleep routine

Winter means it gets darker earlier. Less daylight can throw off your circadian rhythm, making it difficult to get the sleep you need. Not getting enough quality sleep can be harmful for your health and even cause weight gain. Set yourself up for sleep success by creating a sleep-friendly bedroom (cool, dark, and free of electronic devices). Have a soothing bedtime routine and try to go to bed and wake up at about the same time each day.
